Regional Council of Southwest Finland: Enhancing the usability of Lounaistieto

”We benefited the project more than we expected! By analysing the user experience, the students discovered the most important development points, and gave very concrete suggestions on how to solve the problems. Working with the students was easy, since the students were well-informed on the topic and they worked independently. In the future, as new development needs arise, we would like to cooperate with the Project Aces students again.”

Juha Pulmuranta, project officer, Lounaistieto Team

The beta version of the web service had just been launched, and in order to develop the service, information on the usability was needed: how easyly did the users find the information they needed and how enjoyable was it to use the service. In addition, suggestions on how to improve the usability and how to improve the communication regarding the service, were needed.

The studies of the team members had covered geographic information systems, using and presenting geographical information, usability of information systems, communication and political systems and decision making. Furthermore, the team had experience in working with geographical information and with different information systems, communication and working in public administration.

Minikai: social media in the sales staff’s work

“The project gave me concrete help in developing the social media communication of Minikai. In addition, the  project gave me insights on the internal communication of the business. The students have been very flexible and the cooperation has been good, even though I work from Spain and the meetings have been held via Skype. It has also been rewarding to be able to offer the students a genuine experience in the work of an entrepreneur.”

Mini Johansson, entrepreneur, Minikai Inc.

The client:

Minikai Inc. is a family-owned company importing textiles and fashion, and running restaurants. Minikai has a web store, and restaurants and clothing stores on three locations.

The project:

Minikai seeked to develop the identity and visibility of the clothing stores in social media, and to create new ways to keep in contact with the customers. Minikai needed an established way of working in the social media, and a set of clear instructions on how the social media would be included in the sales staff’s duties. Emphasis was put on committing the sales staff and to offering tools for the social media work.

The team:

The Minikai project was tackled by five students of the University of Turku. The team members had studied e.g. business communication, human resources management, media studies, marketing and sociology. In addition, the team had experience in working in customer service, and a solid understanding on the social media.

The team was able to detect the problems and challenges, and to design a plan accordingly. The project allowed Minikai to adopt new tools for internal communication, and the sales staff was provided with concrete instructions on using the social media.
